Gail Slavens: I love volunteering to read to preschoolers through Ready Readers! So many of the children we volunteers read to are suffering from the effects of poverty and other stressors in their young lives, and they love the personalized attention and the free books that we give to them. It warms my heart every week when I walk into my preschool and I am greeted with big smiles, warm hugs and enthusiastic shouts, "Miss Gail is here!" I know I am making a positive difference in the lives and education of 50 children (in four classrooms) each Wednesday by reading and talking to them, and by reciting rhymes, singing songs and playing literacy-related games with them.Ready Readers is a top-notch organization that provides a unique service in our community: promoting a love of reading and developing literacy skills by putting books into the hands and homes of children who would otherwise have no books of their own. I highly recommend the Ready Readers volunteering experience to anyone who believes that every child is precious and deserves an excellent education.
