Best Katsudon Restaurant Saint Louis Near Me

Megan Barron: The service was so poor we didn’t even get to the food. Showed up at 2:30 pm to a sign that said “Please Wait to be Seated.” We were yelled at from the counter and waved on to a table, even though there were multiple workers and few patrons at the time. We sat down and then a waitress came over at 2:32 to say they closed in 10 minutes and could do takeout, but the kitchen was already closed (not really sure how that would work??). We questioned their closing time since we were aware that they closed at 3:00 pm, but were still told that they close in 10 minutes. We’ve both worked in the restaurant industry and have never worked at a place that stopped offering food before they were actually closed (outside of a bar). Definitely won’t return for that service.

Kevin Hacker (Khacker): This was the first time I dined here. We celebrated a late Mother's Day dinner since our son was out of the country. The food was very delicious and not fishy as I first thought it would be. The server was great, very professional, and courteous. We had the salmon avocado roll, Naruto roll, spider roll, and the Yoshi roll. All fantastic and very filling. The only issue I had was remembering how to use chopsticks correctly. A little out of practice. We had a party of 6 that night and just to let you know they automatically add 18% for a party of six. It was fair and you might want to go above the recommendation. It is worth it.

Rich Cline: Excellent Katsu and Miso. Great service! The food is very fresh. The prices are reasonable compared with today's restaurant prices. Clean place. You can park right in front off of Forest Park Parkway. I didn't try the sushi or the ramen here yet. I highly recommend if you enjoy Japanese cuisine, this is one of the best.

Midtown Sushi & Ramen is a must try for anyone who loves authentic ramen dishes or good sushi, and while it’s not in the name, the Donburi bowls are some of the best in town.I recommend the Hakata Ramen if you’re a fan of smoked meats! The pork belly really adds great smoky and fatty notes to the noodles.If pork isn’t your thing then the Spicy Midtown Ramen gives you the same base as the Hakata, but swaps the pork with shrimp and smoky flavor with a spicy broth!Which one is better is a toss up and is just one more reason to come back for a second visit.

Jaron Black: I'm upgrading my review to a five star rating in retrospect. The main thing I would like to highlight is how the cashier was very helpful at answering my questions about whether I could order take-out and how the starter options fit my dietary needs. I didn't need to wait very long for my order to be ready (I only ordered one appetizer, so it only took five minutes) and the food was incredible. I am hoping to eat here again sometime in the future.

It did not seem particularly fresh as the order was brought out to me within about 5 minutes.The inside of the restaurant was of dimly lit and smelled very fishy. Not a super pleasant place to dine in.Not worth the money as far as ramen goes. There are much better options in the same price range.

I needed a little more alcohol. Humor goes a long way. Right?The woman who is at the bar decides to comment, stating. "That's my boyfriend. I saw him make the drink, and how dare you beg for money?"Ok, now I have a rude dry bartender and his weird delusional girlfriend in cahoots with each other—a bad combination—strike 300.I wanted so badly to give this place four stars. But customer service goes a long way. Why would you put a dry, negative person in the front at the bar? They are the face of your establishment.Despite my negative review, I'm sure this is not his first time being rude to customers and staff or having his girlfriend talk irrationally to customers and running them off.Food is cool. Erin Bacher: Great atmosphere. We liked that it was a bit more intimate rather than completely wide open. Scooter was a great waiter and provided fantastic service. We ordered a couple of rolls as well as hot sake. We found that, compared to some other places, the options for specialty rolls lacked a little as well as they were a bit bland. However, we'd would definitely visit again and try other items on the menu.

Almost as if it was old although they made it fresh. The dumplings were okay. The sauce was the saving grace. The house resiling had an odd taste. One of my friends found hair in their food, so that sort of ruined my appetite. The service was SUPER slow even though it wasn't busy. The wait staff barely let us speak before walking away from the table each time they approached with things like untensils or whatever. It was pretty rude honestly. I definitely won't be back.

The broth was spicy with slight favor but enough to complement the noodles. Almost like a scrambled egg instead of the normal egg you get with ramen. The beverage menu. My husband tried to order some type of bubble margarita which once again they didn't have. So the bill after everything ended up being 40 bucks with 18 percent gratuity included. I feel like 18 percent was a reach considering my waiter said she was bring me a refill on the water several times and I never got it until I was done with my meal. Overall this place is MID. Probably wouldn't pick this place by choice again. The place isn't bad, just you can pick a better spot to eat than this place. Ronda Davenport: Came with a group for girl's night out and the service was extremely slow. Although I'm fairly certain there was only one server. The food was okay. I ordered gyoza, California roll and spring rolls. The spring rolls were the best part of the meal. Very crispy and well made. The sweet dipping sauce was a perfect pairing. The dumplings were good as well. The sushi was okay. The imitation crab was not great. Not to mention one person at my table had hair in her food. A couple of orders were wrong. If you're looking for a place with fast, dependable service, this is definitely not the place to go. And hopefully your dish doesn't have hair 🤷🏿‍♀️

I’m not sure if this was an off-night or if something has changed since we last visited, but our food was just bad.Gyudon is my go-to at any Japanese restaurant, including past visits at Robata. What I ate tonight was not Gyudon. The flavor was awful (no sweetness at all), the texture of the meat was mushy, the smell was off. I only ate a few bites before I had to stop because something was clearly wrong. I’m hoping this batch of marinade was just mixed incorrectly and the meat was just broken down too much, but my stomach has not been happy since we left. Along with the off-putting flavor and meat, there also weren’t any slices of onion like there’s meant to be in a solid bowl of Gyudon.My husband had the Tonkotsu ramen and said the broth was super bland, which was also surprising since we’ve had great ramen here before. He tried to eat my gyudon after because we hate wasting food, but he couldn’t do more than a couple bites either.All that said, the pork gyoza were fantastic, so at least there’s that!

Tyler Wildermuth: This restaurant used to exist in the same location as Nobu's Japanese Restaurant, and any review from before 2022 is in reference to a different place and concept, although run by the same Chef Nobu. Nobu's, in its current state, is an incredibly intimate omakase dining experience with superb flavor combinations and rare Japanese ingredients served in a space made to feel like Chef Nobu's private home. It's airy and elegant, and there are roughly 8 omakase bar seats with around 10 more at tables for larger groups. Reservations are likely required, although the host expressed they would be looking into how to deliver a more casual experience in 2023. Well worth the fine-dining cost for a special occasion.Dietary restrictions: Respected a peanut allergy in our group.

Joanna Puterbaugh: A little late in writing a review but here we are. I have been eating at Nobu's since 2007 and my husband has been dining there even longer. We were so sad when the original location was closed and looked forward to his new venture. It seemed like the time would never come. Then an update, with a soft opening! We booked almost immediately. To say that Nobu's has changed would be an understatement. It's almost like Nobu's has grown as a restaurant as we have as people. The interior design is beautiful and simple. The service was top notch. The food was phenomenal. Nobu found out that my husband's favorite item from the original restaurant was the spicy tuna, so he made one just for him. Nobu's son (I can't remember his name right now) was a great host and we had a nice chat with him. Nobu's is more upscale now so the price is also more upscale but totally worth it for a enjoyable evening out.

I LOVE that Nobu works in synchronicity with his family (wife and son) to bring traditional Japanese cuisine to STL.The minimalist and clean of the space design allows for all of the focus to be on the service, the dishes, the utensils/ dishware, and of course the ingredients themselves.I have had two different tasting course experiences here. Both of which are transformative. The overall understanding and balance of the senses and tasting notes is remarkable. Some dishes warm, some cool, some are digestive, some are crisp and all are nourishing. Nobu's understanding of texture, umami, sweet, sour, salty, pungent, and bitter is heavily highlighted throughout the tasting menu.Local ingredients are utilized when possible and even items like Sake are distinctly picked from Nobu's hometown. The thought and intention is evident from beginning to end.The price point may be high for some but even though the dishes are served as chef tasting potions, I have never once left hungry. Jenny Lee: Cozy and modern restaurant. We had their set menu dinner and sat at a table. We were the only table at the time but dinner picked up at the bar. The entire staff consisted of 4 people - the family; they were Japanese polite. All sushi was very fresh and I usually don’t eat raw fish. Cooked entrees were balanced in flavor. House made matcha dessert and red bean is a must!

Not only is it so warm and intimate that it literally feels like a family dinner, but the food itself I can only possibly compare to the place my rich aunt took me to in Los Angeles. And it exceeds that by miles. The creativity, the attention to detail, the atmosphere; everything has been done flawlessly. In a strange way, it also is a celebration of the city itself; what they’ve managed to accomplish here could not be effectively or sustainably replicated in Chicago, New York, or any larger city. It wouldn’t be nearly as calming and personalized. I’m not even particularly attached to living in St. Louis, but truly, if I ever left, this is one place I would dearly miss.

Michael Everett: The menu has a lot of options but the service was lacking at best. Our waitress provided menus and left before we could order drinks, never checked in on us after dropping off the food (my udon was overcooked but everything else was good and the curry was great) and left the bill without asking if we wanted anything else. I know I could have asked but the feeling you aren't wanted at a restaurant is hard to shake. That's unfortunate, because the matcha tirimisu looked amazing.

Karl Wulff: Not your typical sushi place. The space is cool and funky and they play these cool, eclectic food prep videos on big screens behind the long bar that runs most of the length of this linear space. The service is friendly and fast. The sushi menu is unconventional and fun, and after more than six visits I still haven't found any item that I did really enjoy. The biggest surprise was the ramen: It is wonderful. I think I've tried most of the sushi places in St. Louis and this one is far and above my favorite. Well done!

If you walk in to be seated or pick up an on-line order, you are waiting forever!!I was in there right now to pick up an on-line order, and I could see my order sitting back in the restaurant area for 10 minutes getting cold on the counter. I couldn't find anybody to actually get it!! And on top of it, they forgot my wife's green tea which totally made matters worse. $4.95 down the drain. Oh, well. This could be a legit 5-Star Restaurant, but the lack of decent staff workers make it an average one. It's a shame.

Paige Warfield: Their sushi is great! I go there all the time and they know me by name. They left my edamame one time and I told them they forgot it. They preceded to call me a liar in front of other customers. I went back the next week and they were very rude to me. They pointed to the bag and said there edamame in a rude tone. They never gave me eye contact and they just weren’t friendly people in general. They showed me and other customers no respect. I used to love this place but I’m not going back anymore.
