Ryan and Kelle Sherpy: I should have looked at the Google reviews before I booked this through my AmericanAirlines app. I got charged $360 for a 36 hour rental of a Nissan Sentra that I drove less than 50 miles. When I called the rental car company after I dropped my car off very early in the morning and received my bill via email, I got to speak with a very rude employee who explained the charges to me and basically said that they were out of her hands and I should be grateful that they were able to serve me at all. I’m kind of flabbergasted at the experience, the charges, and the way I was treated. By booking through the AA app, I thought I was going to get a much better quality experience. I only booked them because National was sold out. Payless had an opportunity to steal a new loyal customer and frequent traveler from a competitor and instead gouged me for the one rental they got from me. I will never use them again and am honestly still in shock from the whole experience.
Jazmine Force: Do not use this company. Pay the extra $20 for another company it will save you in the long run. I was told by an employee I was required to have insurance. After reviewing the contract when I got home I saw I could decline. I called, left voicemails, put in tickets, and emailed stating my situation and to take off the insurance. I was being reasonable stating I should have read it closer while I was there and will pay the first day. However, on my vacation, I am trying to reach put to someone to remove this and nothing. When I return the car, I am told that’s not the verbiage they use. When in fact, I specifically asked if I was required to add insurance because I know my car insurance covers rentals and was told yes. His lie cost me $125. They refused to own up to and fix their mistake. Use another company.
Jason Porter: I was charged $350 extra for a "loss damage waiver" on a car booked through Defense Travel. This is extremely unusual and something I would never look for. Usually I am verbally asked if I want to add coverage and will always decline. The government self-insures vehicles and has contracts with these companies for fixed rates. Even in the many times I have rented a car with Avis/Payless, I have never had this happen because it simply is not necessary. Customer service stonewalled me, and the manager (Loren Davidson) sent back an invoice with the charge in tiny fine print saying that I initialed it, so he won't remove the charge. They tacked this on after two days of massive winter weather that caused my flights to be delayed for 12 hours, and knowing it was a government rental. I can only assume that the Avis employee figured I wouldn't scrutinize the invoice. She was correct, I guess. Absolutely the most deceitful experience I have had with a rental car company and I will never book through Avis again after dealing with this.

Mark Billingsley: Charged me for refueling vehicle after I filled it up myself. No one ever inspected the car with me before or after. I had to fill out my own form showing gas and mileage. Lady had me sign off on no damage to the vehicle before I drove off but never came out to the vehicle with me. Do not do business with this company!
Ryan Van Orden: Was quoted $430 and told the insurance was $50. Got home saw $1100 charge. Said the insurance was per day and there is nothing they can do about it. Maybe be a bit more clear with your contract. I should have read more so I am partially to blame. Swindlers
Ian Lindop: Booked a rental through Orbitz for 3 days for $176, after my trip I was charged $277 more from Payless. I've been contacting Orbitz and Payless for nearly a month and still no refund. Every time I call or, email, I receive a response that says it should process in 3-5 business days. Still nothing, and, to make matters worse they are refunding the $176 not the $277. I feel seriously cheated by this company, but I haven't the energy or time to keep fighting them. After 2 hours on hold with Orbitz, they just said that its the rental company that overcharged and has to process the refund, not Orbitz. If I had one free time in a time machine I would come back 2 months ago and stop myself from booking them.
Roy Bethel: The service that I received from both the Springfield, Missouri Payless car rental office and the corporate office is so poor I do not see how they stay in business. A one star rating is more than they deserve .On April 1, 2021 I rented a car through the Payless web site. When I arrived at the Springfield, MO counter they ask for my credit card for which they could charge any incidentals. Without asking me they charged me for the car a second time. They only told me this when they handed me the rental papers. They said my payments from the corporate office had not come thru to their system and I would have to contact the corporate office to get my money refunded. That’s when they told me they were a franchise and it was my responsibility, not theirs to contact corporate. Another counter lady heard the conversation and called corporate and she was assured they would refund my money when I returned the car. This did not happen. In the weeks to come In the process of trying to get my money refunded the Springfield office told me I must get resolution from the corporate office and the corporate office said I had to contact the Springfield office. After many calls I reached the Springfield office manager, he refused to do anything to help, told me it was my problem. When I asked to speak to his supervisor he said that was the local owner and their policy was that no one could contact the owner and all issues had to go to him. When I told him I wanted to complain about him, he said I could send the issues to him and he would review but would not send to his supervisor. After many phone calls to the corporate office I was told they would put in a claim for me.. I asked to talk to a supervisor and I was told they did not have one and refused to give me any phone numbers. I asked for a phone number to the claims department and that was also refused. Every time I called I got a different person and a different story. On June 9th I finally got my refund. Is this the quality of service you would expect from a national corporation or the type of service that you would rate as acceptable??

They like to charge you for services that you didn't agree to and then threaten to ruin your credit because their salesman lied. Refused to refund. Worst place ever. No wonder no one was in line to get a car from them. I am editing my rating because after speaking to the main company my issue was resolved but I don't recommend using the location at the airport where the rude manager Loren operates.
Jessica Lawhon: We reserved a car almost 2 weeks in advance and they didnt have it available when we go to pick it up. Then they told us they would upgrade us for free and charged us 20 more for the free upgrade. Since we were leaving first thing in the morning we had no choice but to deal with it. Then we find out they charge 30 for a toll convenience fee no matter the price. We maybe have 15 or less in toll charges. They told my husband at the counter he could call and pay the toll place before we get the bill to avoid the fee. Called them the next day to find out that was a lie.

Kevin Pham: Absolutely the worse experience ever. Rented a car from the STL airport. Turned out to have a defective battery. One day into the trip, the car died...then came back on. Died again a couple days. Customer service got us going with triple a service and told us to take it to this specific location.The staff behind the counter wanted nothing to do with us. Customer service stated due to a defective car, we didn't have to fill it up or anything, just drive it straight there.Upon getting there, they acted loss and clueless to everything and basically forced me to fill up the tank or be charged for it. Explained that the car could die. They didn't care.Went to the gas station and filled it up and surprise! The car died. They refused to help and even said it wasn't their problem and I should tow it to the Springfield airport location.Did my best controlling my frustration and got another jump and gave them the car back with a full tank of gas.They still charged me over 30 dollars for a fuel fee, even though they confirmed it was full. And then refused to refund it. Luckily, the hertz at the airport was extremely helpful and amazing.PEGGY at this location is absolutely one of the worse human beings in how she treated us. Don't give them your business. They don't deserve anyone's money.

Our rental car had broken down bc of a corrosive battery we had called hertz customer service and they told us that we did not have to refill the rental car and just go to this location to exchange cars. When we arrived the employees insisted that we had to refuel the car or we would be charged for fuel knowing that the car was defective and would probably not start again. My husband took the car to the closest gas station to refuel and, of course, the car did not restart and when we asked the hertz employee what we should do they said “oh you have to call road side assistance again and have them jump start your car”. The next day, after this whole ordeal, we went to return the rental car and they still charged us for gas! When we called they stated they had not charged us for gas and would only refer me to the customer service number. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS LOCATION. The employees are rude, unhelpful and disrespectful (esp Peggy and their manager).
Stephen Pustai: I am extremely disappointed in Hertz, super polite staff, but above and beyond that, a worthless experience.I rented a Tesla with them thru Uber, big mistake. Upon explaining that I needed the car till June 18th they gave me a vehicle where the tags expire the last day if May. Top it off after over 8 hours (total time, not includong the last hour, dealing with their service department) trying to figure out why they keep sending me info saying I need to bring it back as it will not auto renew, while the staff keeps telling me other things, both mind you were incorrect.Brought it in to swap it, per their customer service. Nothing will change and all will be resolved they said. Lies! After half a day wasted trying to get it resolved the resolution was to cancel my old reservation and create a new one...already being charged for a late fee, a second deposit now having $500 total tied up for who knows how long.Tried to rent a gas vehicle instead, they tell me they already overbooked them and can't help me, how nice that you overbook your vehicles screwing more people, sweet. No compensation for my time, no sympathy, no nothing but the vague offer of a $50 voucher for a future rental (from their service department nothing from their local office), NO THANKS! I won't ever be renting from you again, and if it wasn't for needing it for Uber i wouldn't keep this one.This has been handled awfully, taking up much of my time with no concessions, compensations or anything. Oh they said in a week, MAYBE, I could come back and rent a gas powered car, but I'd have to go through all of this yet again. No thanks!FYI, after finally reaching someone in their service department, another hour wait, they said I'd have to talk to the issuing office, refused to help, refused to escalate, and hung up on me. When our car was ready we were told to leave the rental at the repair shop, and someone would get it back to Hertz.2 days later we get a"'courtesy'""call saying we smoked in the car and they were charging my card $400. I did not smoke in that car, I don't even smoke. They accused me of lying. Very bad ending to using this rental car company. Who was in the car after we dropped it at the repair shop? Would not recommend very rude.
Brandon Campbell: Booked a rental a week in advance, showed up and they only had an suv. They wanted me to pay more and didn't offer any remedy for their systems incompetence. Spent $25 to Uber there for nothing.

Dollar Car Rental: what do users think?
Jerry Stevens: We rented our minivan from Dollar at Springfield airport and met David there. He was awesome, got us the car earlier since our flight arrived early and even helped us when we returned the car a few days later. He gave us recommendations to visit in and around Branson since it was our first time in Missouri! I saw some of the other reviews but we just returned the car. Will update on any hidden fees or charges. We took pictures before and after the return as well!
Lamar C.: I extended my one day rental to three days. I was less than 1 hour late on my return. (48 mins.) It would have been around 30 mins but there was a line to return vehicles. They billed me for an extra day and added coverage on my extra days. The Dollar Rental site clearly states anything less than a one hour and thirty minute late return will not be billed an extra day. I called to dispute the claim and they were unwilling to stand by their own policies. DO NOT USE DOLLAR!!!
Eddie San: Dollar, Thrifty and Hertz are partnered in this airport and all three are awful. Not a single representative is at their counters. Operation hours are 0700-2300.

Taylor Dye: I rented a car through this company at the beginning of September. I paid over $300 initially for the car. At pick up, I was informed of two charges that I would be paying: the loss and damage waiver and the insurance package that I chose to cover the car during my rental. I was not given a contract or anything and I trusted that what they were saying was what I was being charged for. At drop off, I was given my receipt and had extra charges on there that were not disclosed. I was charged over $200 for an “underage driver” fee that was not mentioned to me at the time of pick up. And the $300 that I initially paid was not credited on my receipt anywhere. I called twice last night and the lady was very rude to me over the phone and would not put me through to a supervisor. I called again today and the supervisor told me that I could not be issued a refund because “I acknowledged those fees when I signed” but an underage fee was not mentioned to me and I did not know I was signing for an underage fee. This company will steal your money and tell you that there is nothing that they can do about it. If you are needing to rent a car for a trip, I would recommend renting through a different company and spend the extra bit of money and avoid having money stolen from you in the end.

Do not let them know you took pictures, instead of normal damage, I got a $400 for smoking when nobody smoked in or near the car. Pictures cannot prove smell. Employee (George) actually told me they add fees to see if they stick. You cannot disprove a smell. Will never use Dollar, Hertz, or Thrifty again.

She and her whole family flew into Branson_Springfield MO airport and she was told she needed to provide her Social Security # as well as a credit check *and* an additional deposit of $500.00. This required *2* round trips to the airport to pickup everyone and a huge delay all the way around.Today another family member flew into Branson-Springfield MO airport and was told the SAME THING! I booked it online and also paid online. Only had taxes to pay when I picked up my car. I went to pick up the car and was went through their whole speal about the rental and car blah blah. I handed them my debit card just to be informed that in order to use a debit card they needed to see my flight itinerary. I drive semi for a living so I didn't fly into Springfield. Since I didn't fly in and didn't have a credit card they refused to honor the rental reservation I had made. I will never rent a car from ANY dollar car rental again.
Alexandria Coultas: I am giving a 1 because I could not give 0 stars. My husband rented my large family an SUV to get us around during our trip to Missouri. After our long two flights with 3 children we looked forward to picking up our rented SUV and getting to the hotel after a long day of travel. Once we arrived at the airport rental car station and waited in line for a while we were repriced to get to the counter to get out car, once my husband got to the counter he was informed that or car was given away. We were apologized to and offered a mustang for our family of 6. I will never EVER use this company again. This was inconsiderate and unprofessional. We pre paid for a service and it was not provided...
Stevie Kuenz: I had a reservation at 7am when the desk opened. I was not helped until almost 7:45am because no one showed up at the desk. This is unacceptable. No business should be ran like this when you have a reservation.
Brandii Pendergrass: I was treated very rudely two separate times during my rental car experience. I thought maybe the first time the guy was just having a bad day so I just blew it off. When I dropped off the vehicle, unfortunately for me the same employee was there and he again was extremely rude and unprofessional. I was charged an extra cleaning fee even though the vehicle was cleaner when I returned it because I actually washed it and cleaned it out (which was not done and there was a note in the car that pretty much said “sorry we couldn’t clean due to weather” which is understandable, but then I get charged a cleaning fee? Honestly I wish I could say that I was surprised, but after the way I was treated, I am not. I have reached out to corporate already (which is something I don’t do, but I think poor actions should have consequences) and I paid a good amount of money for the vehicle I rented so it’s completely unfair to be treated so poorly for literally no reason. I wish I would’ve taken pictures but I honestly didn’t think anything like this would happen. I hope no one else has the same experience.
Will Stokes: I rented a SUV for 3 days. The staff member told me that they only had one available so I took it. When I examined the vehicle it was not clean, there were items left in the SUV from other renters. The exterior was covered in dirt and there were scratches on both sides of the SUV. While driving, I noticed that the service sticker was out of date. I tried calling customer service the next day and I was placed on hold for 40 minutes until I decided to end the call. This was only my second time using dollar. I am not sure if I am willing to use them again.

B. Y.: Not happy with my rental experience from Dollar Rent a Car at the Springfield/Branson National Airport. When we arrived we were told that the credit card had to be in the drivers name. There was also an additional charge per day if you wanted a second person to be able to drive the car. Was also told that the credit card (the one in the drivers name) that you used at the time of pick up was the one that had to be charged. At the time of drop off we were told we could put the charges on a different credit card ( another person that was traveling with us, not the driver). We also informed the associate that the out side of the car was not clean when we picked it up (especially the rear hatch and the windows). He told us the reason was that due to cold weather they couldn't wash the cars, but the day we picked the car up temperatures were in the 50's. The associate at check in must not have been familiar with all of Dollar Rent a Car policies. the only reason I gave it 2 starts is the SUV that we rent was nice and we didn't have any problems. If there are other options I won't be using Dollar Rent a Car again.

Avis Car Rental: what do users think?
Brandi Stapp: Rented a car for 7 days. Returned to be charged 450 for cleaning fee. They said the car wasn't vacuumed and had sand. Worst company ever to rent from. Run fast and far from this place. Have rented from this company before and never had problems but this time takes the cake. The front desk first tried to emphasize that maybe I could not drive the SUV because it was a larger one and most women don't enjoy it. Then the cleaning fee for sand they also now say dog hair . WHAT??
NATHAN ROMINE: I reserved a car at this location through Priceline. I was guaranteed a “full size car” with the description saying that it would be a Toyota Camry or similar. When I arrived, I was told they had an electric car for me. I explained that an electric car would not work for my needs, so, they refused to honor my reservation. Loren, who is completely incompetent, was downright rude. I will never use Avis rental car again.

Patrick Stull: Beware of this location. I have used Avis a lot in my life, but this has to be the worse Avis location ever. I rented a car from here on 06/01. After having the car for only an hour I returned it because I didn’t need it. Lindsey the lady who helped me said that they would still probably charge me for a day. Instead she charged me 259.08 for an hour. After calling corporate they even said that I shouldn’t have been charged that amount since Avis has an hour rate of 59.00. So now it’s a wait game to recover my money. Beware of this location and check your charges because they have some shady employees working here.

Danny Cordova: So yesterday 5/23/23 I reserved and prepaid for a medium sized SUV (Kia Sorento or similar) which was $423.19 for the time I needed it for, so when I received my confirmation it showed a compact SUV (Chevy Trax or similar) for $423.19, and I went back and looked at the original Sorento it showed $481 something I have a screenshot of the original Sorento and the price!! so I chose to chat and got a Fernando and he asked for my confirmation number after giving it to him twice he told me that that number was for another customer which I knew was a lie then I called the Sunshine office in Springfield MO and as soon as I said I had just reserved a vehicle online I got hung up on so I called back and was told that they couldn't help me so I called several more times and they didn't answer the phone by then I was questioning big-time so I called corporate office in New Jersey and they did change my vehicle to the original Sorento but did not charge the original price so I excepted since they would charge $50.00 to cancel which in itself is a scam, so thought I would search for reviews and I feel kinda dumb for not doing that in the beginning but I had done business with Avis in the past and no problem so after reading dozens of reviews which the majority had one star only because you can't rate it any lower I Lost $50.00 and cancelling my reservation because I figured after reading all the people's reviews about being charged for $9.99 per gallon for gas and several other items that was not agreed on by the ones who these people gets there paycheck from !! I chose not to lose more than $50.00 bucks of my honest earned money.I've got my conscience clear !!Danny.p.s. the same confirmation number that I gave Fernando was used in all other dealings including cancelation no doubt in my mind scam alert : don't bother telling me you are sorry,, sorry is an action not just a word. Show me don't type it out.

M Hartman: Had a great experience at this location. Used the Avis website to select a car class and prepay well in advance of the trip. Arrived about 20 minutes early to go over paperwork. They had multiple cars in my class available and let me select which one would work best. Went over the paperwork and had no surprises.I suspect a lot of the problems from reviews are people who rent through a 3rd party site and/or do not read the paperwork and just sign everything. I was asked about insurance but declined because it is provided by my credit card and my personal insurance as a backup. Paperwork listed fees for gas, tolls, etc but you have to actually read these things. Avis deals with a certain amount of risk when they give car keys to a stranger, so it makes sense that they want to check my credit and make sure my credit card has MY name on it.My experience should be typical of what you should expect. I don't think I have ever rented a car before and am certainly not in any type of loyalty program with Avis. I am just a random person who needed a more reliable car for a trip and Avis delivered. I highly recommend going through the actual Avis site. They are the best priced option I found and it wasn't even close. Even Avis at the airport is higher.

Chad Walworth: The best place to rent a car in Springfield. Super staff, streamlined service - to be fair I always prepay my rental and have a card on file. When you go in here expect to be wow’d. Don’t misconstrue that and an opportunity to go in with an attitude of entitlement. If you don’t meet their rental criteria that’s your fault, not theirs. If your card is declined, again that’s not their fault. Be a forward-thinker and familiarize yourself with their TOS before arriving. It’s really not that complicated - but then again I’ll admit I’m not the sharpest tack in the box. Their processes are simple and I love the after hours drop privilege.

Matthew S: Rude says they can't rent out due to license damage. Guy had attitude stated you won't rent at any rental for avis etc. Instead of handing me my license he put it on counter. I see a lot of negative reviews probably from this guy.
Hunter Williams: If you are in need of a rental car, this AVIS location is the last place I would pick up from. The staff is extremely rude, and disrespectful. Out of hundreds of reservations I have never had a rental experience as unprofessional as this one.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car: what do users think?
Michael Typaldos: Terrible service and extremely unprofessional staff. Had a reservation for a specific vehicle that they ultimately did not have when I arrived at the scheduled pick up time. Name calling from the manager was the final straw for me. Then to top it off I was told they wouldn't rent to me (which was almost as comical as the title of manager being assigned to this young gentlemen, considering they didn't have anything to rent to me to begin with). This manager did not give his name but this happened on June 12th, 2023 at 8am.Will not be using enterprise again and after talking to my colleagues, this isn't the first occurrence of aggressive staff behavior at this location. I took my business elsewhere and it went extremely smooth.AVOID Enterprise!!

Courtney Huggins: *Posting for my mother because she doesn't have a Google account but I am part of this trip as well *We reserved a large SUV from the store in Springfield Mo. for our family vacation to save miles on our vehicles and have plenty of space. We reserved it a month in advance and confirmed it the Tuesday before we were leaving on Saturday. Friday night after 5pm we got a call saying they didn’t have a car for us because they extended the rental to the people that had it already. We had 14 hours on a Friday night to try and find a rental car and couldn’t. They really screwed us! The last time we reserved a large SUV we got there and they only had a minivan for us. We won’t go back to enterprise and we travel a lot! This is just bad business!
