Ross Lawrence: I'm actually here for a jiu-jitsu tournament. That being said, the facility is pretty nice. The snack bar is huge and the people working are very friendly. The floors in the gymnasium look fantastic! The restrooms are a little cramped but they do have changing stalls so no complaints from me.

Karalin Sanders: The coach assigned to my daughter’s team definitely did not have the ability to inspire greatness in her team. She had very little control over the girls. She allowed the girls to lay on the gym floor during practice, and she did nothing when team members argued with each other during games. She allowed a select few of the girls to be rude and hateful to teammates during games and practices. The coach did little to inspire the team when games were rough; in those situations she would usually just appear to be frustrated and stand silently by the bench rather than encourage the girls to do better. She allowed some team members to get away with some pretty egregious unsportsmanlike acts, but punished others for lesser infractions.The reason I am rating the gym as a whole poorly rather than just the individual coach is that the gym management did not seem to have any system of observation/evaluation for their employees; thus these issues were allowed to go unchecked the entire season. Occasionally a member of management staff would tell the girls to get off the floor and participate in practice, but it seemed as through the staff never addressed the issue with the coach because the issue persisted. I feel like if the management staff had observed or evaluated the coach, perhaps these issues would have been addressed and corrected.I will be fair to the gym and say that there are some really great coaches at Apex; however, you don’t know who the coach will be (and therefore what kind of coach you are getting) until after you pay a substantial deposit and make a season-long commitment to Apex.Some positives: Sue does an excellent job keeping tournaments running smoothly and the gym has great bookkeeping for the gym and tournament fees. All costs are clearly communicated up front, and there is no “nickel-and diming” throughout the season. I feel like the costs are fair. The items offered in the pro shop are great quality and reasonably priced. Also, the snack bar employees are incredibly kind and helpful!Overall, given the vast number of volleyball clubs and teams in the Springfield metro area, I would definitely encourage families to explore all of their options before committing to Apex. Try to find a club that lets you meet the coach and maybe even observe a few practice before you have to make a season-long commitment!
