Greene County Archives: what do users think?
Ashley Apel: The customer service is top-notch! Everyone is very knowledgeable about the county's history. There is a ton of information to be found here! They have property tax books dating back to the 1890's for house history research, city directories dating back to the 1890's, court record books from the 1830's and after, personal property books from the 1800's, coroner records that go up through the 1970's, Springfield city ordinances from 1851-1903, poor farm records, Sanborn maps, Dram Shop licenses from 1876-1918, various photos, probate records from the 1830's-1980's, as well as a small library that has books on some of the surrounding counties. This place is a gem in Springfield. TONS of information and the staff is very helpful. You can't bring any food or drinks inside though (so the records stay clean), they do; however, provide a table in the foyer for those items to be placed. There is an employee that works for the state that is stationed at the archives that helps people with copies of their divorce decrees and criminal records from 1946-on. Archives employees can get those same records and divorce decrees from 1945 and before (useful for genealogy).Laid back atmosphere that's very conducive to research. Before you try the history museum.....try here!! All the original records are here which translates into MORE INFORMATION! PLUS...2 out of the 4 employees are members from different founding families in Greene County! Another has family that's been here since the 1920's! So their knowledge is a gold mine. Come check them out!
