Upper Limits Rock Climbing Gym - Maryland Heights: what do users think?
dave blutas: I’m a beginner climber and I’ve loved my experience at this gym. The facilities are great, the walls are fun (even without being able to finish any of them yet) and the staff extremely knowledgeable and helpful.
Peter Sommitz: I've been to dozens of rock climbing gyms across the US, and this was a fine gym. I do not think, however, that it is nearly good enough to be the highest rated in St Louis, as it was the worst gym I've been to that was rated as highly as it was. Limited bouldering options that were graded very easy and very straightforward lead/top rope climbing. Nothing terrible, but nothing crazy good.
Nicholas Anselmo: Incredible Climbing Experience, but intriguing, sweet Olfactory Experience as WellI recently had the pleasure of visiting this rock climbing gym, and I must say, it exceeded all my expectations in terms of facilities, staff, and overall climbing experience. The gym's dedication to providing a top-notch climbing environment is truly commendable. However, there was one peculiar aspect that left me puzzled – the unmistakable smell of syrup that permeated the air.Let's start with the positives. The climbing routes were diverse and challenging, catering to climbers of all skill levels. The walls were well-maintained, providing an optimal surface for gripping and scaling. The gym had a wide array of equipment available for use, including harnesses, ropes, and belay devices, all of which were in excellent condition. The staff members were friendly, knowledgeable, and always ready to offer guidance and assistance. Their passion for climbing was contagious, making the entire experience even more enjoyable. Now, onto the syrupy aroma. While it didn't detract significantly from my climbing experience, it was an odd and unexpected presence. I couldn't help but wonder why the gym smelled like syrup. It wasn't overpowering, but it lingered in the air, creating a somewhat unusual ambiance. Perhaps there was a nearby café or restaurant that specialized in syrup-based dishes, but the scent seemed to seep into the gym.Despite this minor quirk, I wouldn't let the syrupy scent discourage anyone from visiting this exceptional climbing gym. The overall experience, facilities, and friendly atmosphere outweighed this peculiar olfactory anomaly. Whether you're a seasoned climber or a novice looking to embark on a new adventure, this gym offers an ideal environment to pursue your passion for rock climbing. With everything said, if you're seeking a remarkable rock climbing experience, this gym is a stellar choice. Just be prepared for a subtle hint of syrup in the air, which may pique your curiosity but won't hinder your climbing enjoyment.
Lila Perry: Always a pleasure climbing at this gym. Friendly staff, good equipment, fair prices. The Boulder routes and top rope routes rotate often as well. However, lately when using the ropes on certain routes, there is an overwhelming maple syrup(?) smell coming from them. I'm not sure exactly what it is but it's genuinely a bit nauseating... besides that I would recommend this gym! 😓
Elizabeth Ayers: Thank you Holly! The class was amazing and insightful!
Michael Ayers: I took the top rope 101 class and I am now certified and climbing! The instructor, Holly, was fantastic and made sure we knew everything including gear, ropes, hand holds, knots, and belaying. Would recommend!
DanielS: Granddaughter’s first time She had a great time. Instructors were helpful and very friendly. Safety is important and the facility is designed to avoid injury. We’ll be back
Michael Munie: Knowledgably and friendly staff. Great selection of climbs
Stacy Kistler: I recently took an intro class with a friend. Oliver is a great instructor & was very patient teaching us how to tie knots & use a belay device. The facility is really large & has a variety of climbing routes with a range of difficulty levels. It was fun & challenging!
brady oechsner: Tyler Brake is the best worker ever, he gave me such beyond amazing service, and he was super cute.
Jade Harrison: Took the Top Rope 101 class and had a great time learning! Very easy going and held me to great standards. Excited to keep climbing with the 2 week supremely discounted membership :)
Doug Albers: I should of taken the Introduction to Climbing 4-week class years ago. Thanks Holly for all your effort an instruction.
Rachel Stanley: This place was awesome! I loved climbing here. The employees were super nice and helpful. I would definitely come here again!
Colette Edson: My kids love it here! It is very large and includes two lounge areas, snacks, a separate work-out room, and the people are very helpful. Highly recommend.
Joel .Klutenkamper: Holly is a great instructor, I got great training and service from her and the whole team.
James Pennington: Matt was very informative and the class learned alot about lead climbing and clipping in. It ran a little long but we learned all we needed to get our lead certification. Thanks guys!!
mike ellis: Wanted to try rock climbing as a new hobby so I signed up for the 4 week class. Holly was my instructor and I was hooked! Shortly after completing that, she offered Tuesday night hangout sessions from 6-8pm. I’ve been coming for a whole month and met so many climbers!!! It’s freakin awesome! I now have a belayer anytime I walk in.If you’re new, show up & put yourself out there. Is it awkward? Sure. But lean into it and you’ll be rewarded for it! I literally went from knowing NOBODY and knowing NOTHING to now having friends to climb with 😊
Aimee Rich: Our scout troop completed the Climbing Merit badge at Upper Limits. The workshop was thorough and a lot of fun! The boys had a great time and learned a lot. The instructors were amazing…. Knowledgeable, encouraging, and professional.
Amber Medley-Terry: We recently hosted a birthday party for our 10yr old son at the Maryland Heights location. IT WAS AWESOME! The staff are very kind, worked hard to help us decorate the party room and showed a tremendous amount of patience and encouragement to our climbers (who ranged in age from 8-18). I highly recommend this establishment and we will definitely be back soon!
Xavier Little Owl: Awesome place great teacher (holly).
ayla vastine: Very great class, I highly recommend trying it out if it’s your first time rock climbing!

Climb So iLL at the Steel Shop: what do users think?
Eliot Rocks: I want to preface this review by saying, the climbing here is great, starting with phenomenal routesetting. There were problems with very complex beta. There were about 7 or 8 that looked like fun multi-session projects. I sadly can't do that since I'm traveling. But it would be very fun to climb here on a regular basis to get to know the style of these routesetters. They have obvious strength in slopers, core tention, campusing, and heel hooking. There is a variety of textures on the holds. So iLL holds are featured, but they have many brands represented on the wall.Got a day pass for $20. Great bouldering wall. They have slab, a 45° and everything in between. The walls are very textured. They have a lot of volumes. The holds are very grippy, I used up almost all my skin in my 2 hour session. The grading is consistent and accurate. I was able to flash most of the problems below my grade level, and got a few at my level. The harder problems such as the V8+ black tags were indeed difficult, but I was still able to do one or two moves on them. So there certainly was an endurance aspect to some of the harder climbs. They used many good sets of holds on the easier problems which is rare to see, but cool for the newer climbers to experience these modern holds. Overall the setting is very good. They could certainly put up more problems, especially on the slab. On one slab wall there were only 2 boulder problems. The majority of the boulders were very low percentage, there weren't many small crimps.Staff was friendly, good shop with many shoe and gear purchase selections. The bathrooms were very clean. The building is an old converted powerplant, and they left most of the historic architecture, which is very cool.I'm excited to check out the other So iLL locations in St. Louis, and look forward to visiting this location again soon!
Amanda Konrad: My husband and I take our daughter to climb here and we love it. I recently went for Yoga and it was a wonderful 75min class.Note: if bringing children, bring shoes for them to climb in. They don’t have shoes small enough for my 6 year old who wears size 12/13 in kids.
ben blizzard: Oh my word, I was blown away by this place. The facility is amazing, and has so much to offer. Great walls, great bouldering, awesome event spaces, and the staff there are so fantastic. You're in for a treat.
Rachel Loeb: Fun for kids and adults. Clean, beautiful gym. Great community
Ryan Martinson: Session in the Gravity Lab with my son whooped my butt. Such a great day!
Thefuzzy One: Took my 6 year old here today. I am always nervous on how “adults” will treat here at places like this. I couldn’t have been happier between the guy who showed us how to do things to the people there. They were all very nice. She loved the auto belays. The ability to climb to her comfort level and come down with no pressure was a great experience. Of note the “kids” room was reserved when we first got there so we didn’t use it till the end. We did feel some of the walls in there where harder then the walls in the main area.
Tiffany Pantovich: We went after winning some free day passes. It's been many years since my husband or I have done any rock climbing, and our kids never had before. It was fantastic! It was absolutely a blast making new memories with my family. We will likely return when we come to town again!
Sean Skipper: Awesome place! Have a bunch of different ways to climb
Payton Lodatoa: Amazing staff and super fun vibes never felt uncomfortable
julia thurmond: Good family place. Must have some experience or you have to take a class
Jason Ramshaw: Hardcore
Indri Harahap: Great people climbing, many levels for lead climbing so not only hard ones.
Emily Peters: Lots of space! Lots of autobelays! It is my favorite place to climb!
Bekah Level: The kids had so much fun and the staff was very accommodating!
matt seawel: Favorite one in St Louis
Jessica Pelletier: Such an awesome gym with excellent customer service. Bouldering routes are changed out frequently!
Cherry J.: Nice location with lots of top rope and lead routes with friendly staffs. Several autobelay routes and kids friendly. Comparable less appealing bouldering.
Ryan Ripley: Fantastic gym, fun routes, and good friendly staff.
Tonya Gurdison: This gym is amazing. Great setting! The area is a bonus. Lots of restaurants and bars
Jason Lane: Great gym. Great people.
Joshua Provow-Wall: Best gym in saint louis!
