Scott, the person overseeing the project, was wonderful to work with. He was patient, knowledgeable, and friendly. He answered all my questions and took the time to explain what they were going to do with the floors. The board replacements look excellent.Everyone that I talked to in the office was personable and very accommodating, especially when we had to push back part of the project by 3 months. Lee DeLaet: Joe was great about coming out twice to the house to personally oversee an assessment of our floor rehab project. Once we agreed on a day for the work, we happily cleared out the 530 sq ft area in the heart of our home -- cramming furniture into every noon-n-cranny. It was quite the obstacle course! Two days before the scheduled work, Joe needed to reschedule for the following week. Not a problem. These things happen. Not convenient, but we understand. Because it was necessary for us to be out of the house, we booked a hotel room for that next Saturday evening (we wanted an AirBnB, but that weekend was strangely popular and nothing was available...we felt lucky to get the overpriced hotel). When his crew showed up, they evaluated the project and let us know in no uncertain terms that it would be a HUGE mistake to proceed. They made a compelling case. We therefore felt we had no choice but to cancel. After the crew left, my husband called Joe and politely explained the situation. Joe expressed concern and replied, "I'll call you back." Curt Rafferty: Had a terrible customer experience with Lawson. I contacted them about a month ago to see if I could get a rep out to look at some work I needed done at my house and the receptionist scheduled a meeting later that week. About 20 minutes prior to the scheduled appointment time, I got a call from the rep saying she was experiencing what she thought was seasonal allergies but in the effort over being overly cautious in regards to the Coronavirus, she said she would have to reschedule the meeting the following week. Oddly enough, she called me a couple hours later in the afternoon and said she was now available to meet if that worked for me, which I found odd. I told her I was now unavailable and had to reschedule. After not hearing back from her the following Monday, I called her to schedule a new meeting time which we mutually agreed upon later that week. The second appoint time came and went and she was a no-call, no-show, and I haven't heard from anyone at Lawson since. I try not to judge a company on one bad experience, but this level of incompetence will scare me away from any contractor I am looking at hiring.

Mark Norwood: Jason from Lawson Brothers redid our hardwood floors and did a fantastic job!! We have not had them redone since they were installed 27 years ago, and they look brand new after Jason did the work. We really are thrilled! He was totally professional, communicative, and clearly knew a tremendous amount about what he was doing. He offered to mix several different colors of stain and put down patches on the floor for us to see what it would really look like. We ended up trying clear/natural sealer as a first step and liked it, so we did not ask for other trials. Jason explained each step and what to expect in terms of the dust or smell in our house, and his descriptions were accurate and helpful. Next time we need the floors done, we will go straight back to Lawson’s and will request Jason (although I would guess that others at the company do a good job, as well).

Megan Barnett: Really friendly people, from owner to sales to installer, so I take no pleasure in leaving a negative review.Read the fine print, or better yet, hire an independent crew you trust to install. Clark did three separate flooring projects and one was a bathroom floor, floating over an existing tile floor.Within hours of install, the toilet was leaking (they removed then reinstalled). It took 3 days and 4 phone calls to get them back out. They determined it was nothing to do with their installation, just that a sprayer attachment on the toilet had randomly broken and was causing the leak and they removed it. It didn’t make a lot of sense since I’d seen water coming from the base of the toilet, but they were adamant this was the cause.A week later, we observed the exact same problem, leaking from the base. Mind you, the toilet is only 3 years old and has never leaked a drop. I took video to prove this was the point of failure.I asked for them to pay for a plumber this time to be sure it’s done right. I also reported that some of the new flooring was clearly swelling and buckling from what was smelly wastewater probably leakage under the floor.They said they are a union shop and can’t pay for a plumber, their only option is to have the exact same guy come back, but to be rest assured, he would fix it and replace any damaged floor from the extra boards I purchased (I mean…I bought those to have on hand in case WE ruin the floors in the future, not to remedy damage caused by the installers). He came out today, reseated it on the wax ring (he made no mention of that previous assurance that it was the toilet sprayer, which is no longer attached). He said he tested it and all was good. Used some of the extra flooring I paid for to replace water damaged flooring. Left.A few hours later, guess what? Leaking from the exact same place. Called the Clark Flooring at 2:30 pm but they were closing down and said no one would be able to help me until tomorrow.I’m tired of going around in circles so we have called an actual plumber who is here fixing it now. It will be over $500 with parts and labor (it simply needs a flange spacer to account for the extra thickness of laying one floor on top of another, something he said should’ve been obvious to the installer). That’s half the cost of the new bathroom floor.The only reason I went with Clark was because they are a Forbo certified installer (necessary for the Forbo materials warranty). I wanted Forbo marmoleum which is a great product but a little harder to find.So my choices for STL area Forbo-certified installers were Clark Flooring or Floor City. I chose Clark, thinking mom & pop shop customer service would be superior. Sadly, that has not been the case.So unless your desired brand of flooring is only sold at Clark or you plan to install it yourself, I’d avoid. I definitely wouldn’t allow them to remove your toilet or any other appliances. The fine print does in fact say they aren’t responsible for leaving them in working order and aren’t responsible for leaks due to their work. Shame on me, I gave it the usual cursory glance before signing. So if, for instance, they move your toilet, refrigerator, oven, etc, to do your floor, their contract apparently alleviates them of the responsibility of leaving it in working order, or from paying for any damage caused by installation.If you run into problems, expect a hassle due to union labor rules. And if they fail twice to fix a mistake, causing you to hire another professional to finally fix the issue, do not expect Clark to reimburse you. My flooring installation now costs 50% more than expected because of the installation error.It’s a shame, they were super nice, it’s all been amicable. But amicable doesn’t fix the 3 separate service calls, $500+ plumbing bill, and using up the spare flooring I had reserved for future damage (no response to my suggestion I should be reimbursed for the value of the extra flooring required to repair damage from installation errors).Beautiful floors, frustrating and costly experience.

Bill Meyer: Clark employee came to my home to measure my kitchen floor and after prying up four layers of tile he told me he thought I had asbestos and would have to have the floor removed before Clark could put in new floor. After removal I went to Clark's office to sign contract and pay downpayment. When workers arrived they had their office call me to tell me that there would be an additional charge of $564.00 above the bid because they would have to add more plywood to bring the floor up to the correct level. I stated that the initial employee who measured the floor told me about the four layers that had to be removed and that he also told me that Clark would do whatever it took to bring the floor up to the correct level. The woman at the office then said that I should have called them and let them know that four layers had been removed. I don't work for Clark and they are supposed to be the Professionals and not rely on the Customer to tell them THEIR JOB! When I tried to reason with this woman and tell her this was the job of the person who initially measured and told me about the four layers she became irate and started yelling at me over the phone saying that "We (Clark) are not going to eat this extra cost." Every time I tried to speak to tell her that they bid this job and should stand behind their bid she would cut me off and start yelling again. She finally apologized for yelling at me and offered to split the cost. I finally agreed because I didn't want to go through the whole process again with another flooring company. BUT.....Clark knew what had to be removed (4 LAYERS) and being in the business they know how thick that is and they BID THE JOB! Also to yell at a Customer is uncalled for! Pretty Unprofessional!

Dan Miller: We recently moved into a home built in 1914. We were searching for a contractor to refinish our hardwood floors. We called Jim Abeln to give us a bid for this work. Little did we know what an education Jim would impart to us. Our flooring was quarter sawn pine flooring 3.25'' wide. Jim educated us about our pine flooring and explained the summer and winter growth patterns. Jim could explain to us where radiators probably were and where original oil cloth rugs were and why they were positioned as such. We felt Jim was a craftsman and extremely knowledgeable about old St. Louis homes and their flooring. Jim warned us about some dark spots in the flooring and also where closets had been and how our landing was amended. These spots would possibly not sand out but would add character to the flooring. Needless to say, the floors are amazing. At the end of the job Jim inspected all areas of the job, every room, every closet, every step, the landing, and the hallway. Kenny, the craftsman who repaired, sanded and applied the finish coats on the wood was also very experienced and easy to talk with about our 100+ year old flooring. The repairs Kenny made do not look repaired; they look original. Kenny is amazingly talented and we were very blessed to have him work on our project. I would definitely recommend Abeln Floor Systems especially if you have old pine or hardwood flooring. Emily DePung: Jim's crew refinished our entire first floor and stairs. 2nd floor was buffed and re-coated with polyurethane. He is very knowledgable about helping you pick the right stain color. He replaced all the shoe molding and allowed us to paint it our trim color before installing it so I didn't have to come around cut in on our new floors! His team did some repairs on our 1940s floors as well - all of which we were extremely pleased with and were of very low cost increase. Jim allows and encourages his clients to choose what is best for them and their budget - he doesn't push pricey things on you just to get a bigger paycheck. The team was very professional and kind. They cleaned up after themselves and were very respectful of my home. Jim gave us daily updates and was on site daily to manage the project with his own eyes (not that his crew needed babysitting!). One of his workers, Kenny, came to do the refinishing and likewise explained on a daily basis what was going to take place that day. Very little dust was left, and the work exceeded all of my expectations. Jim also would periodically call to find out how it was going. I would use Jim's company again in a heart beat. His company was professional, did great quality work and even repaired some nicks that were in the floor before they started. The floors look like new.

They also laid in new flooring in our foyer.We decided to use Rubio Monocoat as the finish for a floor. It gives a nice matte finish. It's a newer product and we heard from several people that it requires highly skilled flooring people for it to turn out well.Abeln did a great job and it looks fantastic.
