John Miller: I read the reviews and there’s a special password? It seems like they don’t really want much business. I would Definitely not want to arrive and not get in. Where are the passwords? Interesting concept in theory but off putting and snooty. Sorry for the 1 star but can’t even figure out how to go to this joint.

Cody Cummings: The Thaxton Speakeasy is a well kept secret of downtown St. Louis. Their cocktails are really well made and their beer selection is pretty good too. The bar staff is always a delight, and they add to the vibe of the whole experience. The Thaxton has a great mix of Art Deco and Art Nuevo décor that helps transport you back to the days of prohibition. Finding the speakeasy is the easy part, but you’ll need to snoop around on their social media to find out how to get the secret password of the week. This place makes for a great date night or a cool place to meet up with friends for a good cocktail.

Kevin C: This was an interesting experience. I visited solo expecting to mingle with cool people in a cool space. I was put on a waitlist so I thought the place would be hopping…after receiving a texts and being escorted downstairs, I was told to place my order at the bar the have a seat in my assigned seat, which was a wingback chair in the corner. Every party has their own assigned seats here, even the couples seated at the bar. No one was standing or interacting. I had a drink and left. It felt more like a table-service only, speakeasy/restaurant. The space was cool and has tons of potential, but the vibe was flat. Not ideal for solo patrons.

The host is a peculiar guy who is initially intimidating but then you realize that he is appropriately in character for the place’s vibe and it becomes amusing. Drinks are great, music is on point, and decor is beautiful. Highly recommended.
Guy P: I think this place is permanently out of business. Went through the trouble of creating an Instagram account to get the password. Showed up at the alley entrance, rang the door bell. No response, the alley is totally dark, I've been to a lot of speakeasies, there is usually a light by the secret entrance, this place is totally dark. Very dangerous. Don't go.

Ric Castillo: Stumbled across this well-appointed, hidden spot just before New Year's weekend and went a couple of times. Beautiful details convey the period well. Have your password ready and banter a little with the doorman. Once seated, walk up to the bar to order. First cocktail was obviously for the crowds, but talk to the clever and accommodating staff: they'll make you something more interesting. Don't like cocktails (...I mean, why?) - they even have Montucky!
Ryan Franks: We went to the Thaxton for a wedding. The place is beautiful, and the bar downstairs is amazing. The bar staff was knowledgable and the guys working that night were super helpful. Everyone had a great time.

Tons of security to stare at me as i walk in then they're nowhere around when people try to start fights and throw glasses across the bar. Don't get a security job to convince other dudes how hot you are, I'm not interested. They were useless. They have garbage games and none of the buttons work. I didn't have a single game that didn't steal money either. I asked for a well drink and she poured skyy. This place should close.

The pizza, which comes by the slice, is incredibly greasy and barely passes at pizza.But truly what makes this place terrible is the security and management. Both are incredibly rude to non-patrons and those waiting outside, and only care about those inside because they want to get your money. Patrons routinely harass people outside of the bar, and neither management or security dissuades this behavior. Security and management also block off public sidewalks and the only ADA entrances to the nearby parking garage and refuse to let those who park get through to their cars.If you're looking for an arcade bar, do not come here. Start bar does not deserve your money. You will have a much better experience at Up Down in the Central West End.

Michael Binkley: Great neighborhood bar. Came here for a RDPR viewing party but stayed for the wonderful backyard patio space and cocktails. While it can get a little busy depending on the night, the crowd is always friendly. Glad to have stumbled upon it.

Vicente: A great "hidden" gem with good vibes. Visiting STL and we stumbled upon Small Change to attend pop trivia and drag with Jewel Charger. My friends and I had such a great time, and enjoyed some great drinks. The manager, Elliot, was amazing and made us feel so welcome. Highly recommend!

Luke Antrobus: Halloween every day of the year? Yes please! The staff here has always treated us well and the regulars are easy to warm up to. The decor is totally bitchin' if you're into spooky stuff. Drink prices are always fair and you definitely get what you pay for. They have a nice pool table in the middle of the bar, (Might be free on Tuesdays, don't quote me) and have a pool league there as well. Bathrooms are small and the cleanliness largely depends on your fellow patrons by the time you use it, but it definitely gets cleaned regularly. patio is great. There is a covered smoking section that is enclosed and heated in the winter and opened up in the summer. Have fire a pit and plenty of patio seating any month outside of October. They do a haunted house in the back patio section for Halloween that is actually really good for the space they take up with live actors and all that, they charge different prices for it over the years but it's usually like 10 bucks and if it's super slow they'll might let you do it for free... Good drinks, good times, great dive bar.

The Scare Factor: Great bar! We were in town for the Halloween and attractions tradeshow, Transworld. We were so glad we found this bar. It's decorated with horror memorabilia.If you are attending the convention, you may need to Uber or drive here. It's worth a visit!The bar bouncer was a dog that greeted us at the front door!

We walked in during peak hours, and all the lights were on, like 5 black guys were standing around doing nothing, and no one was behind the bar. Maurice Ward: Went there to visit my first time going. Bad experience. I put 30 dollars worth of money in the music machine to only hear heavy metal all night long. Like someone was controlling the music and didnt want any hiphop or rnb to play.
Cody Cummings: This our neighborhood bar. It’s an excellent place to pop in to watch the Blues and grab a beer. Their selection is great, and their bartenders are great. There’s always a friendly face at the bar, and new comers are welcome. We stopped in after we move down the street, and we fell in love with the place. If you hang out on the weekends, you can grab a hot dog from the street vendor after 9pm.
Nikita Smith: They are racist. I came in before 3am and they refused to serve me. It was last call at 2:50. I walked in at 2:45. There was no rational for the bartender or waitresses as to why they would not serve me, other than “you are black and you need to go”. I’ve been here before, right before 3am and had no issue until today. Will never go back again.

Kelly Bernards: First time here on Saturday night with a couple of friends, the bartender Danielle was drunk as she said hi and took our orders. Drinks came out without mixers that had been asked for and when I closed my tab there was an extra charge on there for a drink we had not ordered or received. I tried to inform her of this mistake but she was too drunk to understand and so the tab was not corrected. It was very busy here so it must normally be a good experience but it didn’t leave a good first impression on us. Wouldn’t recommend going here and we won’t be back.

bronwyn miller: I used to love this place, and they had several good cocktails and a couple really cool bartenders. Me and my best friend always started our nights out here with a few games of skeeball and the best lemon drops I've ever had from our favorite bartender, but the last few times I've been there I've been disappointed. The drink menu is less good, the quality of them has gone downhill, and the atmosphere is less pleasant. The patio is really nice though!

Went on a Sunday it was DEAD, drink was watered down and game are a dollar a play or 2$ for 3 plays. Up down is only a quarter and had way more machines, better drinks and it was 10x more lively
Riya Krishnan: Nice place to go during weekends. They have so many arcade games, all of them were different and fun. Coin vending machine is available in the games section. Drinks were also good. Staff were also quick and efficient. Just ask for the volume before you confirm your order, some drinks are too much more than you expect.

Nothing against the bartenders, but they should just serve beer and seltzers.The vibe... it's just weird.

I tried one of their new cocktails and it was actually kind of amazing.However I haven't been coming in very often over the last couple years because the pinball will have issues going unfixed for a long time.The stranger things and the mandalorian tables have both frozen on me again (like the screen froze and game becomes unresponsive). Mandalorian eventually unfroze, but stranger things will just hard reboot the entire game.The Jurassic Park machine T-Rex ramp shot stopped working, and since it's the ramp in the middle it's kind of disappointing to hit it and then nothing happens! The raptor shot also was not working last time I came in.I really really love the staff here and I love the atmosphere I just hope the owner learns to love their machines too.

My friends and I came here for drinks this week and had such a terrible experience.First, the drink: We got a drink to share, but unfortunately there was a huge bug floating at the top but were refused a refund. In the picture you can clearly see a bug- they said it was just a part of the lime.Then, the service: Apart from getting bad service on the drink, one of the workers was very creepy and being too clingy to our group, not leaving us alone.Never coming here again. There’s so many other better bars on this street, so I don’t even know why I tried this place. Do yourself a favor and scratch this off your list.

Christina Ladd: Great staff. Bartenders are not rude there REAL. So if you need a hug or a friend try a different bar. These guys keep it real and are funny (If you have a sense of humor)

bronwyn miller: I love the patio here, and usually there's quite a few people, which is sometimes difficult to find in St. Louis. It's a nice atmosphere for the most part, but the DJ's are very hit or miss. I've gone there when they did an amazing job and I've been there when the music was so bad I left. I definitely still stop in on nights out fairly often. The cocktails are really awful though, and some of the worst liquor I've had. You're probably safer sticking to beer.
